Complete visa information for Indian passport holders
Indian passport holders may use Japan's e-Visa system for eligible short-term tourism applications, subject to jurisdiction and current rules.
Indian passport holders generally require a Japan Temporary Visitor visa before travel unless covered by a specific exemption.
Indian residents travelling to Japan for a single tourist visit can use Japan's eVISA. You don't apply on the Japanese website yourself: the application is submitted at the Japan Visa Application Centre (run by VFS Global) for your state. The fee is INR 500 plus a VFS service charge of INR 800. Allow at least five working days after the mission receives your file; it is often longer, and you may be called for an interview.
The eVISA arrives as a visa issuance notice, not a sticker. At airline check-in you must open the live notice on your phone with an internet connection: printouts, PDFs and screenshots are not accepted. The visa is valid for three months for one entry, with a stay of 15, 30 or 90 days decided by the mission based on your itinerary, and it can't be extended.
The eVISA covers one tourist visit only. Multiple-entry visas, business trips, visiting relatives and medical stays still need a paper visa. Cherry-blossom season (late March to early April) and autumn colours (November) are the busiest times, so apply early for those trips.
