Complete visa information for Indian passport holders
Indian passport holders require a Schengen visa for short visits to Germany unless exempt.
Germany is a common destination for Indian business travellers, trade-fair visitors, and parents visiting children who study or work there. All of them need a Schengen short-stay visa, valid for up to 90 days in any 180-day period, for travel to Germany and the rest of the Schengen area. The adult fee is EUR 90 plus a service charge.
Germany's visa appointments are in high demand, especially before summer and around major trade fairs, so book early and keep your documents ready before you get a slot. Decisions normally take 15 calendar days. Business travellers need an invitation letter from the German company and a covering letter from their employer. Parents visiting students should include the student's enrolment certificate, residence permit and address.
Indian applicants benefit from the EU's cascade rule: after two Schengen visas used correctly within three years, you can be issued a two-year multiple-entry visa, normally followed by a five-year visa if your passport has enough validity. It is not automatic; consular officers decide each case. On arrival, the EU's Entry/Exit System records your fingerprints and photo at the border.
